Heavy Duty Tapping Machine Solution for Large Thread Applications
The Customer
Hypneumat worked with a manufacturer based in Illinois that required a reliable and efficient solution for high-volume operations. Operating in a demanding production environment, the customer needed equipment capable of handling large threads in tough materials while maintaining strict consistency from part to part.
The Challenge
The customer’s application required tapping large 1”-8 threads in cast iron at a fast production rate. The thread also needed to start at the same position each time on every part, ensuring consistency and tight tolerances.
To meet these requirements, the customer needed a high performance, heavy duty tapping machine that could deliver both power and precision, while ensuring repeatable motion throughout the tapping process.
The Hypneumat Solution
Hypneumat delivered a customized solution using the Hypneumat LS46E leadscrew tapping unit, engineered specifically for their high-performance threading applications.
This tapping machine is equipped with a 1.375” straight bore spindle and a powerful 5 HP gear motor, belted to achieve a 285 RPM spindle speed. This configuration provides the power and stability required to synchronously tap large threads in tough cast iron. This machine also uses a TM Smith floating tap holder, allowing the tap to radially float and minimize broken taps.
This combination of power, control, and flexibility ensures optimal performance and consistent threads even in the most demanding tapping applications.
The Result
With the implementation of the LS46E tapping machine, the customer achieved a significant improvement in both thread productivity and consistency.
