Four Spindle Drilling / Reaming Machine for an Aluminum Casting Manufacturer

The Customer:

A customer specializing in aluminum casting in the Southern United States needed a customized machine to automate precision drilling/reaming operations. 

The Challenge: 

Previously, the customer had teams manually reaming metal parts and wanted to accelerate their process. The customer provided the engineers and designers at Hypnuemat with drawings and product samples detailing the specifications, including differentiations between right and left hand parts, and tight tolerances required for their production process. 

The Hypneumat Solution: 

The goal of the Hypneumat team was to modernize and streamline the drilling/reaming process by designing a custom automated spindle drilling and reaming machine capable of cutting all the needed holes identically at once for both left and right hand product parts. 

Hypneumat designed and developed a high speed automatic drilling machine with a four spindle Commander 850 series multi-spindle head driven by an autofeed Hypneumat M38EHB drilling unit. The four spindle fixed position plate multi-head has ¾” ASA spindles, holding TM Smith radial floating tool holders. This setup is column-mounted above a pneumatic clamp part holding fixture. The machine base is a 33” x 36” table with a coolant trough, including 3-sided safety guarding and a light curtain. The machine is PLC controlled, fully wired, and ready for the customer to connect power and begin processing products in their facility.

The Result: 

Before the machine was shipped to the customer, Hypneumat created detailed videos highlighting its operations and specialized functions, providing the customer’s team with the necessary training to seamlessly integrate the machine into their existing production line and minimize production downtime. 

The customer can now efficiently cut holes for both left or right side parts simultaneously. The custom, fully automated four spindle drilling and reaming machine provides the customer with multiple benefits including:
